On 8th December 2022, the 2022 Shanghai International Public Relations Forum, a forum jointly held by Shanghai Public Relations Association, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University and Tongji University, took place in Shanghai. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University Sub-forum on “Energy Transition and Path Exploration for Caron Peak and Carbon Neutrality” was organized by the SJTU China-UK Low Carbon College (LCC) and chaired by Changying Zhao, Chair Professor of SJTU and Dean of LCC.
Hailin Sha, President of Shanghai Public Relations Association, Qiang Zhou, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Development & Reform Commission, and Ansheng Zhang, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University delivered welcome speeches to the guests.
Hailin Sha gave his warm greetings on behalf of Shanghai Public Relations Association and conveyed gratitude to Shanghai Jiao Tong University for organizing this sub-forum.
Qiang Zhou pointed out that Shanghai, as a leader in reform and opening up and a forerunner in innovation and development, is accelerating the construction of a modern metropolis, and should take the lead in promoting a high-quality, green development path.
Ansheng Zhang said that Shanghai Jiao Tong University would spare no efforts in promoting energy technology advances, and expressed the hope for more breakthroughs from enterprises, institutions and universities around the world.
Tianshou Zhao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chair Professor of Southern University of Science and Technology delivered a talk on “Perspectives on Energy Storage Technologies for Carbon Neutrality” in which he emphasized an urgent need for energy storage technologies used for modern grids.
Liejin Guo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University introduced the “Supercritical Water Gasification-Integrated Synergistic Multiple Generation Technology for Pollution-Free Carbon Resource Utilization” which illustrated the water’s importance in fuel transformation.
Wei Wei, Vice Dean of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, analyzed various technical methods of carbon reduction based on their potential to reduce emissions and their technical feasibility and priority in his report titled “Analysis of Technology Priorities in Key Areas for Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality”.
Junfeng Li, Investment Partner of Sequoia China and Executive Member of the Council of China Energy Research Society delivered a talk on “Logical Thinking about Energy Transition for Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality”, and explained the logic behind the target, path, challenges and countermeasures.
Guang Meng, Chair Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Vice Chairman of the University Council, gave a talk on on “Remote Sensing Satellite Promotes the development of Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Strategy”, and pointed out that China's civil remote sensing satellites have reached the level of developed countries in terms of quantity, but there is still a big gap from the realization of high-precision carbon sink and carbon sink monitoring which needs more investigation.
Volker Sick, Professor of University of Michigan delivered a talk on “Implementation of CO2 Utilization” and defined two main types of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilization (CCU) products, Track 1, or durable capture and stabilization, and Track 2, or temporary capture, which can contribute to a circular carbon economy displacing fossil carbon.
Changying Zhao, Chair Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Dean of China-UK Low Carbon College, made a report on “China's Energy Transition for Carbon Neutrality: Path Exploration and Technology Outlook”, which analyzed the opportunities and challenges faced by China's current energy industry and introduced three major research areas - non-fossil energy, energy storage and energy internet.
Markus Mueller, Professor of University of Edinburgh, gave a talk on “Offshore Wind Power: Challenges and Opportunities for Carbon Neutrality” and analyzed the challenges and opportunities for developing offshore windfarms in UK, EU and China, and introduced the wind turbine technologies and predicted its evolution trend.
This forum provided a great opportunity for experts and scholars to discuss the latest research progress and development trend of renewable energy, energy storage, carbon monitoring, carbon capture and utilization, and zero-carbon technologies, and to communicate the energy transition under the dual-carbon target, as well as the strategies, policies, scientific and technological innovations and actions for high-quality economic development.
