Jeff’s academic research looks to advance low carbon economy pathways. His efforts adopt ecological economic principles and employ biophysical based sustainability assessment tools to support policy and planning decisions and consumer behavior change to foster more sustainable consumption patterns. Jeff has a strong publication record with over 500 citations. His research has won national and international awards. He is an experienced lecturer and facilitator having given numerous training sessions and lectures on indicator development, sustainability measurement, governance, ecological economics and leadership. Jeff has extensive experience measuring and reporting sustainability indicators at a municipal level. Jeff developed sustainability and environmental performance indicators for the City of Edmonton, City of Saskatoon, City of Halifax, the Town of Oakville, and Leduc County. He was involved with the development of the Nova Scotia GPI, Alberta GPI, and Canadian Index of Wellbeing initiatives and is considered as an expert in ecological footprint and carbon footprint measurement at a sub national level.
Jeff complements his academic record with over 15 years of professional experience working with all levels of government and private industry. He is a highly sought after consultant on projects supporting low carbon transitions and sustainability indicator development. His skillset includes sustainability measurement, sustainability reporting, full cost accounting, strategic planning and systems analysis. In addition to his role with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Jeff is practitioner and Adjunct Faculty member with the Faculty of Management, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Dalhousie University.
