Bio
Rui Tang is an assistant professor at the UCL Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources since February 2021. His research interests include building energy system modelling, grid-building interaction, optimal design and control of energy systems and distributed renewable energies, etc. To date, he has published over 40 articles and received multiple awards, such as the ‘2021 Best Research Paper Award’ in Building Simulation, and the ‘2018 Outstanding Paper Award’ in Applied Energy. Before UCL, he worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as Senior Scientific Engineering Associate and postdoctoral fellow at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Rui acts as the Member of CIBSE and Charted Engineer, the Young Editorial Board Member of Building Simulation and Applied Energy, and the Scientific Committee Member of European Computing in Construction.
Abstract
The pressing threat of climate change urges all sectors to be deeply decarbonised for the avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions. Since buildings account for up to 40% of total energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas worldwide, being energy efficient and low carbon has become increasingly essential in most countries. Meanwhile, modern buildings are capable of doing more to benefit the adoption of renewable energy resources to decarbonise the energy system and power grids. This presentation will discuss the necessity of decarbonising the building energy systems, potential technologies and case studies of some selected projects from the perspectives of industry-oriented and academia-oriented.
主讲人2:Zhiwen Luo (罗志文), Chair in Architectural and Urban Science, Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, UK.
题目:Indoor and urban overheating risk assessment during heatwaves
(建筑与城市过热研究)
Bio
Prof Luo’s research focuses on designing smart, resilient, and healthy built environments at both building and urban scales with minimal energy expenditure, in response to climate change and public health emergencies such as COVID-19. His research has been funded by NERC, EPSRC, BBSRC, Innovate UK, Met Office, ADEPT (Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning, and Transport), Climate Kic, Global Innovation funding with the total funding exceeding £5m (as PI and Co-I). He is the Board member and Award Committee Chair for International Association of Urban Climate (IAUC) and Chair for Science and Technological Committee: Environmental and Climate Impact for International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ).
Abstract
Traditional epidemiological study on exposure to heat and air pollution mainly focuses on outdoor environmental parameters, but overlooks the fact that people spend more than 90% of their time indoors. A better understanding of both indoor and outdoor environmental quality design could improve our assessment of exposure to these important environmental hazards. In this talk, I would like to share some of my research work on the integrated thinking of building and urban design to achieve the goal of resilient and healthy living, in particular on heat exposure in an urban environment.
