Climate change is one of the most urgent and complex challenges that we are facing. As Both global warming and extreme weather events induce more demands for science-based and collaborative solutions. It is within this context that the China-UK Low Carbon College (LCC) was founded at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with a vision to serve as a bridge between nations, disciplines, and generations in the shared pursuit of a sustainable, low-carbon future.
Established in 2017 as the first low carbon college in China, LCC embodies the strategic partnership between China and the UK in addressing climate challenges. Drawing on expertise from leading UK universities including the University of Edinburgh, University College London and Imperial College London, and with the support of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the college integrates global insights with local actions. Guided by our philosophy of internationalization, interdisciplinary collaboration, and industry–education integration, we are committed to building a world-class educational demonstration zone in the low-carbon field. Our mission is to cultivate future leaders, entrepreneurs, engineers, and scholars who can drive the low-carbon transition through interdisciplinary education, high-impact research, and international cooperation.
Over the years, LCC has made remarkable progress in advancing research and innovation in the low-carbon field. We have built a world-class faculty with diverse international backgrounds and launched impactful research in carbon finance, carbon management, renewable energy, and low-carbon technologies. These efforts have led to a growing portfolio of high-quality publications, research projects, and international collaborations. Our dynamic, multicultural student community is deeply involved in research and gains valuable practical experience through strong ties with industry. Many of our graduates are now making meaningful contributions in academia, industry, and policymaking, both in China and globally. We have also established strategic partnerships with top universities in the UK, Australia, Singapore, and beyond, forming a robust international platform for joint research and education. Through active participation in global climate and sustainability dialogues, LCC continues to enhance its influence as a research hub.
Looking ahead, we are committed to further deepening international partnerships, broadening interdisciplinary research initiatives, and enriching our educational programs. We strive to be both a hub of academic excellence and an incubator for pioneering ideas and practical solutions that address the world’s evolving climate challenges.
None of these achievements would be possible without the unwavering support of our partners, colleagues, alumni, and friends around the world. On behalf of the college, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your trust, collaboration, and shared commitment to building a better and greener future. Let us continue to work together – across borders, across disciplines, and across generations – to address climate-related challenges with wisdom, determination, and innovation.
