On 18 September 2022, the China-UK Low Carbon College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University held its 5th anniversary at the LCC in Lin-gang, Shanghai.
Prof. Zhongqin Lin, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Mr. Gao Li, Director of the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Mr. Ting Miao, Deputy Director of Lin-gang Special Area Administration, Prof. Xinyuan Zhu, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and representatives of over 30 key industrial partners of the LCC attended the celebration. Prof. Changying Zhao, Dean of the Low Carbon College, chaired the event.
Prof. Zhongqin Lin first sent his congratulations via video. On behalf of SJTU, he raised three expectations for the College: first, to deepen the integration of industry and education, and provide high-quality resources and good environment for the cultivation of innovative low-carbon talents; second, to take the responsibility of encouraging more students to join the low-carbon cause, and contribute to China's double carbon goals and the world's response to climate change; third, to continue to build and deepen collaborations with global partners.
Mr. Ting Miao, Deputy Director of Lin-gang Special Area Administration, delivered a speech. He expressed that the Lin-gang Special Area Administration will continue to support the development of Low Carbon College, and collaborate with LCC in the areas of low carbon energy system construction, low carbon manufacturing, low carbon building, and smart transportation, to make contributions to the construction of a smart, low carbon and resilient city.
Mr. Gao Li, Director of the Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, delivered a speech via video. He said, “climate change is a major global challenge and the achievements of the Low Carbon College since its establishment are of great significance in promoting China's response to the challenge of climate change.”
Prof. Peter Mathieson, President of the University of Edinburgh, delivered a speech via video. He congratulated on the 5th anniversary of the Low Carbon College and hoped that the University of Edinburgh and Shanghai Jiao Tong University would further strengthen cooperation in the low carbon area.
Prof. Changying Zhao, Dean of the Low Carbon College, made a report on the recent progress of the college.
Xinjie Xue, a 2020 graduate student, delivered a speech as a student representative.
Mr. Xiaoming Lai, Chairman of Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange, also delivered a speech on behalf of the industry advisors of the College.
At the event, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Edinburgh announced the 2022 joint seed fund (second-round) programme. Prof. James Smith, Vice Principal of the University of Edinburgh, also sent a message via video for the launch of the joint seed fund.
The College also signed strategic cooperation agreements with seven enterprises in order to further deepen the close cooperation with key partners.
On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the College, Prof. Katharine Carruthers, Pro-Vice-Provost (East Asia) of University College London, Prof. Sai Gu, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor of University of Warwick, Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics, Baowu Clean Energy Co., Ltd. and many other domestic and international partners all sent congratulations to the LCC.
